Research at UEG 2026 Explores Effects of mBIOTA Elemental Diet on Body Composition & Fat Loss
Poster Presentation at UEG 2026 Highlights Visceral Fat Loss Benefits of Palatable Elemental Diet

SANTA MONICA, Calif.—October 20, 2026— mBIOTA Labs, an emerging medical food company revolutionizing medical nutrition for the management of gastrointestinal (GI) conditions, announced that a clinical study featuring mBIOTA Elemental™ Diet was presented at the United European Gastroenterology (UEG) 2026 Week in Barcelona, Spain. Exploring fat loss benefits first identified during their 2023 prospective clinical trial in humans, this new study strengthens a potential whole-body benefit of the palatable elemental diet beyond the management of gastrointestinal disorders.
The abstract, titled “Effects of Exclusive Palatable Elemental Diet on Body Composition in Obese and Lean Mice,” assessed the additional whole-body benefits of mBIOTA Labs’ palatable elemental diet flagship product originally formulated to manage conditions like small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). In partnership with mBIOTA, renowned GI researchers from Cedars-Sinai evaluated the impact of the mBIOTA palatable elemental diet (PED) on body composition in controlled lean and obese mice groups.
The findings expand on the research with mBIOTA Elemental Diet™ on whole-body composition and the potential effects on visceral fat loss while maintaining muscle mass. In lean mice groups, mice fed with the PED demonstrated reductions in total fat and subcutaneous fat. Visceral fat also decreased numerically, while muscle mass was preserved. Among the obese mice, those fed with the PED experienced profound reductions in visceral, subcutaneous, and total fat, along with modest muscle mass loss during early adaptation. Together with prior human data, these findings support a preferential effect of elemental nutrition on adipose tissue, while maintaining a healthy muscle mass profile.
“During our 2023 prospective clinical trial, we noticed significant and sustained visceral fat loss without muscle mass loss. That motivated us to further look into researching the whole-body benefits of PED,” says Nicola Wodlinger, CEO of mBIOTA Labs. “We’re encouraged by the findings of this study that reinforce the broader whole body benefits of mBIOTA Elemental. As a science-backed organization, we’re committed to expanding the clinical evidence of elemental nutrition and uncovering its greater potential impact for all patients.”
As an evidence-led company, mBIOTA Labs is open to exploring additional research partnership opportunities across a range of clinical specialties. For more information on mBIOTA, mBIOTA Elemental, and other clinical findings, please contact:

About mBIOTA Labs
mBIOTA Labs is an evidence-led medical nutrition company advancing the science and use of elemental nutrition. Used in clinical care for decades, elemental diets provide essential nutrients in their simplest forms, allowing them to be absorbed with minimal digestion and supporting the nutritional management of a range of chronic gastrointestinal (GI) conditions. Founded from firsthand patient experience to provide a scientifically validated alternative to pharmaceuticals for chronic GI conditions. mBIOTA works with leading clinicians, researchers, and food scientists to set a higher standard for how elemental nutrition is studied, formulated, and experienced.
Its flagship medical food, mBIOTA Elemental™, was developed to address one of the category’s longstanding barriers: tolerability. Through clinical research, practical innovation, and patient-centered support, mBIOTA is working to make this established clinical approach more viable, accessible, and better understood in modern digestive care.
