mBIOTA Elemental Diet Does Not Promote Fungal Overgrowth and Reduces Candida

Concerns about Candida overgrowth often arise in patients undergoing nutritional therapy, especially those using elemental diets. A new study presented at ACG 2025 provides reassurance: elemental diets do not promote fungal overgrowth - and may actually reduce it.
In laboratory (in vitro) assays, two commercial EDs and their core macronutrient components did not stimulate overgrowth of Candida albicans or Nakaseomyces glabratus compared with control conditions. Some components like medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, even modestly reduced fungal growth.
In a human clinical subset (30 adults consuming a 2-week exclusive ED), fecal Candida albicans levels decreased significantly (about 3.3-fold) after the ED period, indicating reduced fungal burden rather than overgrowth in vivo.
These findings reinforce the safety and potential antifungal benefit of mBIOTA Elemental in managing gut imbalance, especially in patients with SIBO, IMO, or yeast-prone dysbiosis.
